Why You Should Store Metal Jewelry Pieces Separately From One Another

Jewelers reveal what can happen when silver, copper and other materials sit side by side in a jewelry box or tray.

If you’ve ever bought or received a piece of jewelry that came with a warning to store it separately from other necklaces, bracelets and earrings but thought, “What’s the worst that could happen?” — the answer is: scratching and oxidation.

“The issue is if you put two metals together, you create, basically, a battery; a galvanic cell where these ions will transport across one another and that’ll lead to corrosion,” Marcus Young, a material sciences and engineering associate professor at the University of North Texas, told HuffPost.

A galvanic cell causes spontaneous oxidation-reduction reactions that result in pitting and discoloration of the jewelry, Young explained. “These [reactions] form on that surface and they make it no longer shiny, nice metal,” he said.

Copper-based pieces are most prone to these types of reactions, and silver is another one storing silver with other metals can cause it to oxidize faster.

How fast a piece oxidizes depends on the alloy percentage, or how much of each metal makes up the final product. Judith Anderson , a professional jewelry appraiser, told HuffPost that platinum will not tarnish because it has no base metals in it, but different types of gold have different makeups.

“If you’re looking at 14-karat gold, it’s only 58.5% pure gold,” Anderson said. “The remaining components are usually a combination of silver and copper in varying ratios, depending on the color. If you’re looking at white gold, it either has nickel in it as an alloy or could also have iridium in it, which is in the platinum group.”

Other gold variations, like rose gold, typically don’t consist of nickel but do have more copper than silver, while green gold has a higher amount of silver than it does copper.

The jewelry industry doesn’t use one standard ratio to create gold, though. “Different craftspeople have their own recipes when they’re alloying their gold,” Anderson said. “Large companies that sell gold have a specific formula they use for their production. What causes the color is the variation of ratio between the copper and the silver content.”

Even sterling silver “is not pure,” Anderson said. “It still has alloys in it and so it will still tarnish.”

Scratching between dissimilar metals occurs because of their different hardness levels. For example, “platinum doesn’t oxidize, but it can get scratched because it’s actually a little bit softer than gold,” Anderson said. “So if you store platinum and gold jewelry together, the gold might scratch the platinum piece and you’d start to develop a duller finish.”

The Best Way To Store Jewelry

Exposure to the air contributes largely to oxidation, which is why experts agree that storing items individually in clean, dry environments remains the optimum method for keeping all jewelry scratch- and tarnish-free.

“That’s the No. 1 tip regardless of if it’s silver, gold or platinum,” said Amanda Gizzi of Jewelers of America. “Keeping them separate will keep them looking their best.”

For silver, Gizzi advised using tarnish-free storage boxes specifically designed for the metal. And she warned against piling pieces into a jewelry box where they end up sitting on top of one another and getting tangled. Instead, Gizzi suggested installing dividers in a large jewelry box or storing items in individual plastic baggies.

“That’s how almost all jewelers store everything,” Gizzi said of the latter option. For necklaces, Gizzi offered up the hack of leaving the clasp hanging out of the bag to keep it from getting tangled.

Anderson goes as far as storing each earring in an individual baggie and then putting the two baggies in one bigger bag to keep the pair together. “If you really take very good care of things, you don’t have to have it repaired and polished as often,” she said.

Young noted that a cloth-lined jewelry box will help keep additional moisture from damaging its contents. “The more humid something is, the more moisture in the air can promote that oxide hydroxide formation that would lead to tarnish,” he reiterated.

For anyone who wants to keep their items on display, Anderson likes to frame window screens and put individual earrings through each hole. “I wouldn’t do that with really expensive jewelry, because you don’t want them sitting out where someone could see them, but if you have inexpensive earrings, that’s a good way to store them,” she said, acknowledging that this method doesn’t prevent against oxidation but does work to keep items separate.

This approach can also be used for chains by adding hooks to a utility tray (display forms jewelers use for overstock and to store pieces overnight) and putting a frame around it.

What To Do If You Notice Scratching Or Tarnishing

Despite best intentions, normal wear and tear of our beloved jewelry happens. Anderson said that for silver, you can use a commercial silver cleaner, but for gold, you’ll want to head to the jeweler so they can polish it on a polishing or buffing wheel.

“The best thing to do is take those pieces to your local jeweler,” Gizzi agreed. “Either have it polished or at minimum, cleaned. That general maintenance should be happening around once a year anyway.”

But patina, the sheen on a jewelry’s surface due to age or polishing, can also be embraced.

“There’s some beauty in the corrosion process,” Young said. “Patina is natural. There’s a question of, if it was shiny, do you want to restore it or do you want to have some sort of natural beauty to the jewelry? Generally we want them to be shiny but you don’t want to excessively clean jewelry either, because you don’t want to remove the surface.”

See, too much cleaning can be a bad thing.

An affordable baguette ring(01 of15)

"This is my most beloved ring at the moment and I've wanted one in this exact style for some time now. I love the asymmetrical placement of the stones where they're not in a perfect aligned shape, it adds some character. It honestly looks fab when I wear it on any finger thumb, index, middle finger (it truly doesn't matter, it looks good ALWAYS). I've washed my hands a bunch with it too and I've seen no signs of wear and tear. This is a jewelry steal." Ali Faccenda (credit:Ali Faccenda / BuzzFeed)

I am not gentle with my jewelry I wear them to sleep, while I shower, etc. I also have v, v sensitive ears and I'm happy to report that these haven't irritated my skin or tarnished even a bit! I have three sets of lobe piercings and wear these alongside my plain gold huggie hoops and they are the perfect complementary piece." Chelsea Stuart

A pair of Tiny Tassel tortoiseshell hoops(06 of15)

"I'd wanted something from The Tiny Tassel a Black woman-owned, Charleston-based small business specializing in super whimsical and smile-worthy handmade clothes and accessories for ages. I finally ordered these adorable earrings after including them in a roundup of stylish things from Black-owned businesses . They're such a cool twist on classic hoops and I wore them with several different outfits as soon as I got them (they really stand out on video calls!). They perfectly combine several of my favorite fashion things: statement earrings, scalloped details, acrylic tortoiseshell, and a gorgeous lavender hue (can you tell from this post that I like purple??). My one note of caution is that the tassels can come off if you tend to play with your jewelry like I do, but that is totally my fault. Honestly, even if I eventually lose all the tassels, they'd be great plain (or not-so-plain) hoops!" Katy Herman

By being able to customize this piece, it ensures that I'll love it and will continue to wear it. It's a great size to stack with my watch too!" Ali Faccenda

"I can confirm that these earrings are in fact poke-free and are the perfect way to add a little sparkle to an everyday look. Their push pin flat backs take a little getting used to, but since they're designed to be worn 24/7, I don't take them out unless I want to swap them for a different style. And lucky for us, the brand provides a helpful guide for inserting this piercing jewelry!" Jasmin Sandal

"I was gifted one of these and am obsessed with it for multiple reasons. I love that it subtly pays tribute to my struggles with my mental health (as well as how far I've come!), as it's shaped, quite literally, like an antidepressant pill. However, that's only apparent if you look closely otherwise it's just a cute smiley face! Additionally, V. "If there's one thing I'll treat myself to, it's cool jewelry. I've bought rainbow clay earrings, a nose-shaped ring, and other baubles I wear on the reg. The latest addition to my collection is an initial 'G' necklace. I have a long French name, and squeezing nine letters on a chain is kinda difficult. This tiny piece still works and I love its Gothic-inspired design." Genevieve Scarano

An OXB disco chain(12 of15)

"I recently treated myself to this handmade necklace and I love it so much. I love wearing simple chains but found it annoying that I would have to remember to take them off before I did a workout or even showered. I've worn this chain (along with the satellite chain ) for the past week, and so far they have held up great. I've done a number of workouts with them, and they don't get in my way at all. I love that the necklaces are simple enough that I can wear them with everything (including sweats), but they add an interesting detail. I like how this disco chain looks as the light hits it. It's really cool! I'm already eyeing more necklaces from the site to add to my collection." Abby Kass (credit:OXB)
A BaubleBar ring set(13 of15)

"I am really lazy when it comes to jewelry. Like, really lazy. I am always wearing four sets of earrings and at least six rings at once but that said I never ever swap them. Once I find something I like, I wear them day in and day out and I don't baby them. I sleep in them, shower in them, slather my hands in hand sanitizer, etc. I've had this threesome of stacking rings from BaubleBar for a few months now and so far they're holding up beautifully despite it all! They haven't tarnished, left any tell-tale green rings on my fingers, or irritated my skin in any way. I like that I can stack them all together or wear them on three different fingers and they compliment each other and my other pieces. They're exceptionally easy to wear." I throw these babies on whenever I want to look like I put in a little more effort than usual and they totally do the trick! My favorite part is how lightweight they are they don't tug at my ears or feel heavy after hours of wear." Chelsea Stuart
