Former Olympic gymnasts are among dozens of assault victims seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI for failing to stop sports doctor Larry Nassar.
The Department of Justice has concluded that FBI mishandling of allegations against former USA Gymnastics physician Larry Nassar allowed him to continue abusing women and girls.
The gold medalist said the attackers yelled racial slurs and insisted the group go back to where they came from.
The Department of Justice said it will review the misconduct of agents in the USA Gymnastics case, but FBI veterans say the problems run much deeper.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
The "gross mishandling" of complaints against serial sexual abuser Larry Nassar led to "more athletes suffering unimaginable pain," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal.
The U.S. star, whose personal struggles seized the world's attention, tied for the most Olympic medals ever won by an American gymnast.
Biles had previously bowed out of the team final at the Tokyo Olympics after experiencing the disorienting "twisties."
After the Larry Nassar scandal, advocates are calling on sports groups, gyms and more to commit to preventing child sexual abuse by adopting the set of principles.
A spokesperson for the FBI said the actions of its employees are "inexcusable and a discredit to this organization."
