Civil rights leaders, celebrities and politicians remembered the trailblazing Black actor and cultural icon who died Thursday at age 96.
The actress is best known for her Oscar-nominated role in the 1972 film, "Sounder."
Each day with her is a master class. She is 94 years glorious. A giant in our time," the director wrote about the legendary actress on Tuesday.
"Thank you for all that you are, and for all that you continue to give us," the director wrote. "This is the least of what you deserve, Your Majesty."
"Prioritizing hope whenever possible is a brave and bold thing to do," the award-winning director wrote.
"Every dream. Every goal. Every gift," wrote director Ava DuVernay in a happy birthday tweet.
