As president, Putin continues to react intensely to criticism as any oligarch or journalist who criticizes or opposes him is likely to find themselves in prison or dead.
Ever since Vladimir Putin invaded Crimea, U.S. conservatives have gleefully recalled how President Barack Obama condescendingly dismissed Mitt Romney during the 2012 campaign for labeling Russia as America's number one geopolitical foe.
The real problem is actually the administration's over-engagement in this case -- as in meddling in the affairs of another state and trying to rearrange its domestic political machinery to suit Washington's agenda.
