Phoenix is already the hottest large city in America and is now poised to set yet another heat record.
Temperatures in the area reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking the previous record for the date by four degrees.
Temperatures this high are "extremely anomalous," the National Weather Service said.
The streak was finally broken Monday afternoon, when the high topped out at 108 degrees Fahrenheit.
WHAT'S HAPPENING
Authorities continue to battle blazes that have been raging for days across the country amid a return of heat wave temperatures.
Arizona's capital has seen record-breaking high temperatures over the past few weeks.
New evacuations were ordered on Wednesday as wildfires raged near the Greek capital.
Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Southern California were hit his week with 100-degree-plus temps and excessive heat warnings.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) declared a state of emergency to increase energy production and limit demand during the hot weather.
As climate change accelerates, more than 100 million Americans will find themselves regularly facing heat index temperatures of 125 degrees.
