Twitter Turns Five! See The First Tweet Ever

Spring is in the air, and you know what that means: it's time to celebrate Twitter's birthday.

Monday marks the fifth anniversary of the first tweet, sent on March 21, 2006 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey . (Back then, the service was called "Twttr.")

Dorsey and a handful of people that made up Twitter's small team had been busy brainstorming and programming for eight days before the platform was ready for its first non-automated message, which read "Inviting coworkers," according to Dorsey.

Fast-forward to 2011. Twitter now handles an average of 140 million tweets per day, and the Twitter staff includes 400 people, according to statistics published on the Twitter Blog. (See the latest Twitter stats here )

UPDATE: According to Dorsey, his "inviting coworkers" message was the first tweet written by a human . An automated tweet that said "just setting up my twttr" appeared on his feed ten minutes earlier.
