Mike Huckabee shared one of his trademark jokes on Wednesday.
It didnt go well.
The former Republican governor of Arkansas shared this post on Twitter:
Must have been an "awkward" moment for Angela Merkel to sit in ceremony as the Allies commemorated D-Day that broke the back of Nazi Germany. https://t.co/pnNGCoD3B0
— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) June 5, 2019
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was born a decade after D-Day. Today, Germany is a staunch U.S. ally and member of the European Union .
It wasnt long before Twitter users stormed Huckabees timeline with some 9,000 or so thoughts of their own:
How blind to one's self can the elected leader of a former slave state be to get snarky about someone else being the elected leader of a former fascist nation?
— JRehling (@JRehling) June 6, 2019
Huckabee and his kind just can*not* see themselves when they look in a mirror.
Must be an awkward moment for Southerners to sit in ceremony as the nation commemorates July 4, the celebration of the nation they tried to secede from.
— Holly (@absolutspacegrl) June 6, 2019
Yeah, and the Queen was sitting there still in a snit about the American War of Independence. God you're stupid. And so ignorant of Europe. And so, so unfunny.
— Michael Marshall Smith (@ememess) June 6, 2019
Actually no. Shes a true leader and strong ally. Grew up under communism, broke the political glass ceiling in Germany and saw her nation united and democratic. Not comprehending any of this is why youll never be at such a ceremony: theres no kids table for cornpone grifters. https://t.co/CSQYbPFXc7

Angela Merkel was never a Nazi, never a Nazi sympathizer, and she never called neo-Nazis "very fine people." So, why would she feel awkward?
— Sharon Gibson (@SharonGibson3) June 6, 2019
No, it wouldnt be awkward because Germans like Merkel have worked very hard to face and reject Germanys Nazi past and support liberal democratic values. You could learn a lot from Merkel, if you were capable of doing so.
— Mark R. Yzaguirre (@markyzaguirre) June 6, 2019
This is such a highly inappropriate tweet
— Roland Scahill (@rolandscahill) June 5, 2019
I'm as much as a German (genetically) as Angela Merkel and my grandfather died in Germany as a US G.I. fighting the Nazis.
— voize_of_reazon (@Voize_of_Reazon) June 5, 2019
WHAT IN THE HELL HAS HAPPENED TO THE GOP IN THIS COUNTRY?????????
Or, it shows how far we have come. Once our enemy, now one of our strongest allies. Chancellor Merkel represents freedom, and does it with grace & class. I wish we could say the same about our leader, instead of the international embarrassment that he is.
— Anna (@candidginger) June 6, 2019
The Germans have reckoned with their Nazi history, and it's an ongoing process. How is the United States coming along with reckoning with slavery, Jim Crow, stolen land?
— David Jn Fuller (@DavidJonFuller) June 5, 2019
Merkel isnt the one associated with nazis, Mike.
— Great Scott! (@GreatScott1991) June 6, 2019
It must be "awkward" being this stupid.
— Ben Pfeiffer (@bppfeiffer) June 5, 2019
Angela Merkel has far less in common with Nazis than Donald J. Trump, and I say this as a Jew. Also, go fuck yourself to the depths of hell, father-of-a-dog-killer
— Stefanie Iris Weiss (@EcoSexuality) June 5, 2019
it's almost as awkward as wishing the Japanese prime minister a "happy memorial day" wouldn't you say?
— Lizzard (@lizzcone) June 5, 2019
Must be awkward for you to be owned every time you tweet
— Sarah Parcak (@indyfromspace) June 6, 2019
Since most people commenting here understand how idiotic your tweet it, they might be interested in this fascinating profile of Merkel, a woman whose intellect and accomplishments are truly remarkable. https://t.co/dHfaZMMedb
